Heatwave prep checklist for renters.

The two-week and one-day-before checklist that lands a Klímr install ready for a heatwave — what to check on the balcony, what to confirm with the neighbours, and what to do if the unit ever trips a breaker. Read it on screen or download the same one-page PDF at the bottom of the page.

Two weeks before install

Balcony load check
Measure where the panel will sit on the railing and where the cooling module will hang on the window-frame clamp. Combined weight is roughly 18 kg — confirm the railing is fixed (not a movable screen) and the wall behind the window-frame can take the clamp load without flex.

Extension-cord safety
Klímr ships weather-rated 4 m solar and 2 m grid cables, sized for the unit draw. If you must bridge longer, use only an outdoor-rated, RCD-protected (RCCB) extension cord in good condition — no indoor reels, no daisy-chained multi-plug adapters, no cable under rugs or doors.

Window prep
The window-frame clamp needs a frame depth of at least 3.5 cm and clear sash travel. Clean the frame where the clamp pads will sit, confirm the sash still opens fully, and clear the area inside the window of anything that would block airflow.

Neighbour courtesy timing
Drop a short note to the flat directly below and to either side a week ahead: "Saturday morning install, about 90 minutes, no drilling, no loud steps." If you share a balcony wall, also flag the rail-side neighbour so they can keep the door closed during panel tilt setup.

Top up the buffer
Run the unit on solar or a short mains charge the day before so the LiFePO4 buffer reads full by evening. The buffer is what carries you through the heatwave night — starting below 80% leaves you dependent on grid draw during peak evening rates.

Pre-cool the room
Close blinds or curtains on any south- and west-facing windows an hour before. Set the unit to 23C in auto mode and let it stabilise. Resist the temptation to crank to 18C — the compressor will short-cycle and not actually cool the room any faster.

Test run + breaker plan
Power the unit up and walk through every fan mode plus the night-mode ramp. Identify which breaker in your panel feeds the outdoor socket — Klímr ships on a typical 16A RCD-protected circuit. Note the breaker position so you can reset quickly if it ever trips.
Safety note
If the unit trips a breaker
Switch the unit off at the panel before you reset the breaker. Reset the RCD, then bring the unit back up on Eco or Night mode rather than full cool — a tripped breaker usually means the circuit briefly exceeded its rating, and Eco draw is well under the headroom. If it trips a second time, move the unit to a different outdoor socket on a different circuit and write to klimr@polsia.app with the time it tripped so we can diagnose whether it is the circuit or the unit.

Two heatwave-specific reminders

Run the buffer through the peak evening hours (18:00-23:00) and recharge it from next-day solar rather than pulling from the grid at peak rates. If your block is on a planned-load-shedding schedule, pre-cool and fully charge the buffer ahead of the announced outage window.
